Penny Dreadful returns with a new cast, new setting and new supernatural mystery.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will begin on Showtime in the US from April 26th 2020. The eight episode series will be based in Los Angeles in the 1930s.

A Change in setting for City of Angels

In an interview with EW.com showrunner John Logan spoke about his return to Penny Dreadful. He said he had done Gothic Horror with literary characters but “The world changed with such a seismic crash everywhere around us.” More specifically, Logan points to “the worldwide resurgence of political extremism, atavistic nationalism, dangerous demagoguery, and the vehement racism and antisemitism,” and this show is his response to that.

The show revolves around a family displaced by the construction of the Arroyo Seco Parkway in Los Angeles 1938. The building of this motorway and many more across America led to segregated areas in many cities and Logan hopes to explore what affect this had on the people living during the time.

There will of course be supernatural elements. Most notably from Natalie Dormers’ demonic character of “Magda”.
